{"id":44866,"date":"2025-01-28T15:02:59","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T15:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opinionatedbastard2021.com\/?p=44866"},"modified":"2025-03-04T19:12:57","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T19:12:57","slug":"canada-first-nations-reject-3-6-billion-treaty-settlement-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opinionatedbastard2021.com\/2025\/01\/28\/canada-first-nations-reject-3-6-billion-treaty-settlement-offer\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada &#8211; First Nations Reject $3.6 Billion Treaty Settlement Offer"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<h1 class=\"title details-title\">First Nations reject $3.6B treaty settlement offer<\/h1>\n<p>The First Nations of the\u00a0Robinson Superior Treaty said they\u00a0are rejecting a $3.6 billion dollar compensation offer and will be challenging it\u00a0in court.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court of Canada gave the provincial and federal\u00a0governments six months to negotiate a settlement with the First Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Those negotiations have\u00a0failed,\u00a0Gull Bay First Nation\u00a0Chief Wilfred King told Newswatch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, it&#8217;s very disappointing,&#8221; said King. &#8220;The First Nations really thought that the Supreme Court rendered a decision that would assist us in terms of seeking justice through the courts and through a negotiated process. And many of our First Nations, they&#8217;re very disappointed with the what the end result was after six\u00a0months of hard negotiations on our part, and yet we feel the other parties did not come to the table with, with open hearts and did not act in a just and honourable way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We recognize the need to address these past wrongs and are committed to repairing our treaty relationship with the Robinson Superior Treaty First Nations,&#8221;\u00a0the Ministry of Crown-Indigenous Relations said in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snnewswatch.com\/local-news\/no-deal-canada-and-ontario-unable-to-negotiate-settlement-with-robinson-superior-first-nations-10139834?utm_source=tbnewswatch.com&amp;utm_campaign=tbnewswatch.com%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0a written statement.<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;Building on previous discussions, we worked closely, in good faith with the First Nations and Ontario over the past six months to try to reach a negotiated settlement. Unfortunately, the parties could not find the common ground to achieve this goal in the six-month timeline provided by the Supreme Court of Canada.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The settlement was intended to compensate the First Nations for\u00a0at least 150 years of underpayment as treaty annuities had not been increased since 1875 when they were set to $4 a\u00a0person per year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The amount of wealth that&#8217;s been taken from our territory should have reflected in the offer,&#8221; said King.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We feel that had the number been much higher, there would have been, you know, more of us buying into the process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The First Nations have estimated the value of the resources extracted from their lands at approximately $135 billion said King.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court ruling\u00a0laid responsibility on the Crown to\u00a0augment treaty\u00a0payments liberally and justly &#8220;sharing\u00a0the\u00a0wealth of the land.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>King wouldn&#8217;t say what a number the First Nations would have accepted as they are headed back to the courts on the matter. He said they are now calling on the courts to impose a resolution.<\/p>\n<p>The matter could\u00a0go to\u00a0a first hearing as early as June, said King.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the governments must still pay out the $3.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Supreme Court ruling,\u00a0the matter has already been delayed too long.<\/p>\n<p>For six of the 12\u00a0First Nations, including Gull Bay, this means their share of the compensation money will be transferred as quickly as possible and distributed as the individual First Nations see fit, explained King. The other six First Nations have outstanding land title claims, which will delay the payments to those communities.<\/p>\n<p>The $3.6 billion in compensation will be paid in equal proportion by Canada and Ontario, said King.<\/p>\n<p>The province has not yet responded to requests for comment. &#8211; snnewswatch.com<\/p>\n<p>article website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snnewswatch.com\/local-news\/first-nations-reject-36b-treaty-settlement-offer-10140242?utm_source=tbnewswatch.com&amp;utm_campaign=tbnewswatch.com%3A%20outbound&amp;utm_medium=referral\">here<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Where are these billions of dollars going to come from?\u00a0 What government programs will be cut?\u00a0 Who will suffer?\u00a0 The answer is that the money will\u00a0 be added onto the $2 trillion Federal and Provincial debt.\u00a0 When you are in the trillions of dollars in debt, a figure that will never be paid off, then what is another 100 billion?<\/p>\n<p>The FNs lose nothing by rejecting the offer. They know that the Supreme Court will force the governments to pay more. Much more.\u00a0 At worst, they still have the $3.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p>And if the Superior Robinson FNs get a big payout, will that not encourage FNs that have already settled land claims to ask for more?\u00a0 \u00a0You know, fairness and all.<\/p>\n<p>I still do not understand what this land claim money is supposed to be for?\u00a0 The FNs get the tens of billions settlements dollars but the Federal and Provincial governments still have to pay for reserve infrastructure such as houses, schools, fire protection, water treatment plants, airports, roads, bridges., evacuations due to flooding and fires, &#8230;everything including the excavation of potential residential school burial sites.
