Thunder Bay – Stabbing In City Is Now Too Mundane. Not Interesting Enough For Local Media.

Man charged in connection with stabbing incident

Police have laid multiple charges in connection with an incident that sent a person to hospital with stab wounds on Friday afternoon.

It happened at the Court Street/Red River Road intersection.

The victim was observed taking photos outside a business when a man lunged at him from behind and struck him with what appeared to be an edged weapon.

The injured person was taken to hospital.

Officers were able to identify and locate a suspect nearby, and learned that other individuals had also been accosted but were not injured.

A 54-year-old man from Quebec is charged with aggravated assault, two counts of assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He was remanded into custody following an initial appearance in court.

Thunder Bay is a city where a stabbing of a person minding his own business is soooo common that it does not even warrant coverage of the court proceedings and conclusions.  A stabbing that took place in the heart of the north downtown core on a Friday afternoon.  Not in some alley or side street but in the immediate vicinity of a major intersection. Right in the main business area of the Waterfront Business District. In broad daylight.

And this is now considered a normal occurrence in this city.  Yaaaawan…. another stabbing?   What? Not a hammer attack this time?  Not newsworthy.

Is it safe to walk around this city?   Hard to say.

Will someone with an ‘edged weapon’ lung at you when you are least expecting it?  In the afternoon?  In a busy downtown area? The odds are not zero.

Maybe someone will sneak up behind you and attack you with a hammer.  Also, the odds are not zero.

Now I can see why everyone drives in this city.  Lessens the chances of you being knifed of bludgeoned.

I still believe that these attacks warrant media coverage through the entire judicial process.  The public needs to know how the courts are handing these crimes.  Its important.
