Thunder Bay – Friday

The city is flooded with discarded pieces of clothing.

Makes a nice black and white

Clear sky with a rippled water surface.  Not going to get anything interesting this morning as far as sunrise photos go.  There will be colour but it will all be along the horizon.

One of my standard shots. When its dark, there are not many things to photograph.

As you can see, the horizon is bright.  Little to no refection in the water.

The sun is about to make its appearance. Technically, we see the sun before it actually rises above the horizon.  The same is at sunset.  The sun has set before we see it set.  Optical illusion. Something to do with light and the atmosphere.

I asked AI and got this explanation:

Yes, at sunset, the Sun has already passed below the local horizon due to the Earth’s rotation. The astronomical definition of sunset is the moment when the upper limb of the Sun disappears below the horizon. However, due to atmospheric refraction, the Sun’s light is bent as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, causing the Sun to appear higher in the sky than its true geometric position. This bending effect means that the Sun is actually already about one diameter below the horizon when it is observed to set. As a result, the Sun is geometrically below the horizon at the moment of sunset, even though it is still visible due to this atmospheric refraction. This phenomenon also causes the day to be slightly longer than night, by approximately 10 minutes at temperate latitudes.

So at sunset, when the bottom of the visible sun hits the horizon, the actual sun is already below the horizon. At sunrise, its the opposite.  When the bottom of the visible sun is equal to the horizon, then the real sun begins to clear the horizon.

Maybe I should not have even brought it up as its just complicates sunrises and sunsets. They should remain simple and beautiful.

There is the sun or is it?

and so the day begins.

A painted rock. The artist did not spend much time on this art piece.

Playing with light and shadows.  Pravticing.

Another couple of POSs were dining in Marina Park.

Nice texture and patterns

Coneflowers are interesting.  The big cone in the centre is great for closeups.

This sly is showing a lot of interest in this flower.

The cone closeup.

Once again. light and shadows.  Looks more impressive in real life.  To get the image just right, I would have had to spend a lot of time, which I did not want to do.

Photography to me is a hobby, not a career.

Whatever this was, it had a very bad day.

Still working on closing the holes.  A lot of work is taking place inside.

Is this public art?  It could be. How is this any different than a lot of things you see in museums or in our parks and downtown core?

One thing for sure, it is inclusive and does say something about our community.

Yes….
