Fire engulfs Wapekeka building where community member was killed by police

Ontario Provincial Police say they’re investigating the cause of a fire that engulfed the youth centre in Wapekeka where a man was recently killed by police.

An OPP spokesperson told Newswatch they were notified about the blaze around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 17. Police also confirmed the fire was at the youth centre, which is also used as a courtroom for fly-in court in the remote First Nation.

It was the same building where Tyresse Roundsky, 23, was shot and killed by police while allegedly armed with a knife on July 30.

Nobody was inside the building when the fire happened, OPP said and no one was hurt in the blaze.

Community fire crews responded to fight the fire, police said.

Nobody was hurt and  now they get a new youth centre.  I’m going to go out on a limb and predict the new centre will be much better/nicer than the old one. Just a guess mind you.

Notice that there are a lot of fires on remote reserves?   On a per capita basis, I wonder how the rate of building fires  compare with other communities?  Larger communities.

With little to no fire fighting capabilities in those communities, structure fire is something that they should be very serious in preventing. Something the local government and administration needs to consider their Job #1.
