A record-high temperature was reached in Thunder Bay

Monday was the warmest-ever Sept. 16 in Thunder Bay.

“We’re trying to hold on to summer,” said meteorologist Gerald Cheng.

Data released by Environment Canada shows the temperature at the airport rose to 29 C, a full two degrees higher than the previous record.

The old mark was established in 1948.

Cheng said a new record was also set Monday at Upsala, where the temperature of 29 C broke the record of 28 C set in 1893.

The normal high at Thunder Bay for this time of year is only 17 C.

I am not sure that the airport fairly represents the temperature of the city.  Nor do I believe that you can compare the temps at the airport in 2024 with those of the forever past.

The airport is a giant parking lot. Lots of concrete and asphalt.  No shade and little grass. The airport area has change a lot of the decades.  More concrete and more asphalt.

Many, if not the majority of weather monitoring stations around the world are at airports or in the city.   Once again, cities are nothing but asphalt and concrete jungles. Little grass. Little shade. They change over years. More asphalt. More concrete.

Temps are going to be high when measured in those situations.

How about having several monitoring stations located across the city?  Come up with a city wide average.  What I do know is that the temp at the waterfront in Marina Park is not the same as at the airport. Current River is different than Westfort.  Saying that what is measured in a single location is the temp for the entire city is wrong.   It means nothing, unless you live at the airport.
