Thunder Bay – Saturday – 9/11 Plus 20

Do you remember where you were 20 years ago when the world changed?  I was in the Holiday Inn Toronto Airport on a course.  The day’s class just began when I noticed that the airport had gone suspiciously quiet.  The one thing about Pearson Airport is that there are planes landing and taking off all the time.  It get so the point that you do not even notice the noise.  But what you do notice is when that noise suddenly stops. No planes were taking off. No planes were landing. None. I can’t ever remember that happening before. And it stayed quiet. This was not a temporary thing.

It was during the morning break that we found out what happened. At lunch, everyone was in their rooms watching the news. I still remember the tv stations replaying the planes flying into the twin towers over and over again. It was like a scene from a movie.

Of course, getting home on Friday was now a problem.  With all the cancelled flights, there was no guarantee that we could get on a flight home on Friday.

Seeing how the course continued the following week, people who wanted to stay over the weekend were allowed.  If you wanted to go home for the weekend, then you could go to the airport and take your chances that the flight you were booked on would be flying and that there was a seat for you. I stayed.  A free weekend in Toronto.

Another day in history where everyone remembers where they were.  Just like the assassination of JFK.
