Thunder Bay – Family Of Man Who Died At District Jail Calls For It To Be Closed

I thought that jail was supposed to be a deterrent. Punishment for breaking the law.

Being seen as a ‘death trap’ would, in my mind, make people want to avoid being sent there. Avoid breaking the law.

But it is not doing that.   Why is that the case?

Why should anyone care?  Just don’t break the law. Problem solved.

“First Nations Indigenous People are set to fail because we overpopulate, we are the ones that overpopulate these correctional centres and that’s the way the correctional, the justice system works. That’s how oppression, colonialism works”

Why is it that sooo many Indigenous People, who make up a very small percentage of the population OUTSIDE of the correctional, justice system make up such a large portion of the population INSIDE the correctional. justice system?   Something is very wrong and you have to go right to the source of the problems to find out what the problems are.  You have to go to the communities that are raising the children. The home.  The family. The parents.  That’s where you have to start.

MPP Sol Mamakwa needs to take a hard look at the reserves that produce the offenders.  What is going on there?  What is life like for young people living in remote communities?   What kind of parenting do these children receive?  What else?  Drugs? Abuse (mental, physical, sexual)?  I suspect there is much going on that is not being talked about.
