Thunder Bay – Shelter Village Expected To Open This Spring

Shelter Village expected to open this spring

Construction will resume on the temporary shelter village on Monday with an anticipated spring launch for the project.

The proposed 80-unit shelter village is located at 879 Alloy Place and encampment response supervisor, Rilee Willianen said initial activity next week will focus on site grading and drainage.

“Once that’s all done, the electrical servicing will begin,” she said, adding that includes installing hydro poles and overhead electrical lines.

She also noted that while construction had paused for winter, behind the scenes work has continued – that work includes design, submitting permits and getting policies and procedures developed with the village operator.

After site grading, construction of support structures is set to begin, including the community building that will house washrooms and laundry facilities, said Willianen.

That will be built on the site, but the shelter units will be constructed off-site and then transported back to the village for installation.

Most of the work will be done away from the roadway and disruptions to nearby businesses and services will be minimal. However, the city says temporary closures or restrictions may be required on the recreational trail and the area’s off-leash dog park.

Any anticipated disruptions will be posted at the site.

A neighbourhood liaison committee will also be established to make sure communication is open with neighbouring residents and businesses.

The city expects to have a soft launch of the village, which is currently within budget, in the spring of this year with full completion anticipated in late spring or early summer. – tbnewsatch.com

I believe this is a mistake that will cost taxpayers millions of dollars and solve nothing.  The ‘unhoused/addicts/mentally-ill” Industrial Complex is already salivating in anticipation of the financial windfall they are all about to receive.

I believe that the City of Thunder Bay has now become responsible for these ‘village’ residents.   Have we now opened ourselves up for future lawsuits?

Also, I hope the company building this ‘village’ is  not the same company working on the Water Street bus terminal.
