One thing I have noticed of late is that taking photos in the dark without using a tripod is hard. The results are mixed at best.
Anyway, its about the exercise. If there is no sunrise, then just enjoy the walk and grab a photo of whatever looks interesting.
The thing is that the camera rarely captures what the human eyes can see.
But you try anyway.
