Red Rock Indian Band members receiving land claim funds
Adult members of the Red Rock Indian Band can get their share of a recent land claim settlement now.
According to a notice shared on social media, the First Nation began issuing payments on Monday. Cheque are being issued to members who show up at the band office and sign a release form.
Payments will be issued 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. weekdays until the office closes for the holidays on Dec. 20.

What are these land claim settlements supposed to achieve? The money, which is supposed to compensate the band for the lost use of their land, is then dispersed to adult band members. When an issue arises such as the need for a new school, community centre or a new bridge, additional policing, health services, whatever causes the latest “state of emergency” then the Canadian taxpayer, the very people that are paying these land claim settlements, are required to pay for those things as well. Why?
At what point will the First Nation people be financially responsible for communities? We are pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into these places whenever asked and then asked for more.
Just give them the money legally required and set them free. Instead of handing out the cash to the adults, keep some of it in the community to pay for things the community requires. Maybe a tax for residents? A percentage of the land claim settlement?
We pay taxes for services, why not them? At some point, we need to cut the cord. Give them the money, let them decide how to spend it. Maybe a budget?
