Notice all of the money pouring out of senior levels of government’s wallets lately?
Trudeau government to send $250 cheques to most people, slash GST on some goods
Feds want $411 million to cover refugee health care as the number of new arrivals soars
$20M in new winter road funding for Ontario First Nations
Local company gets $400K to increase modular home construction
Hajdu ‘thrilled’ to see city addressing homeless crisis
Ambulance funding gets a big increase
Agricultural research station receives renewed funding
There are dozen more examples. My question is Where is the money going to come from? Both the governments of Ontario and Canada are running massive budget deficits. I would think that prudent finance would require budget cuts equal to all of this money being handed out left right and centre. But I do not see that happening.
Interest payments on the provincial and federal debts are taking a huge bite out of the taxes we are paying to governments. Municipal governments are depending more and more on funding from senior levels of government for things that should be coming out of municipal budgets.
Collin: confident that temporary village funding will come through is just one example. I would still like to know exactly how much it costs to run this city. Total cost that includes ALL forms of income from everyone. I believe that would show that the property taxes we pay cover only a portion of the total costs. The true costs are being hidden from the tax payer.
At some point, we must acknowledge that there is a limited amount of money, municipal, provincial and federal, that taxpayers have to give and running up the credit card only delays the inevitable ‘financial pigeons’ coming home to roost. It will not be pretty. Stock pile canned food.
